Strictement parlant, les termes «assistance» et «présence» supposent un rôle passif de la part d'un sujet, alors que «participation» laisse entendre qu'il y a un rôle actif, une collaboration. Dans la pratique cependant, les différents auteurs ne tiennent pas souvent compte de cette nuance.
